3x - 14 = 2x + 10
 
Subtract 2x from both sides and add 14 to both sides to get variables on one side and constants on the other. 

3x - 2x = 10 + 14

Simplify

x = 24. 

Now plug back in. 

3(24) - 14
72 - 14
