What can the fossil record tell us about present day organisms?

The fossil record can give us a look into the past showing us what different organisms looked like and how they evolved over time. Over time, organisms change due to everything from weather to food to landscape and by looking at the fossil record, we can explain why certain animals are the way that they are and how they were before.
