Steps to solve:

y - 5 = 3(y - 3)

~Distribute right side

y - 5 = 3y - 9

~Add 5 to both sides

y = 3y - 4

~Subtract 3y to both sides

-2y = -4

~Divide -2 to both sides

y = 2

Best of Luck!
