Each sublevel is assigned a letter.
The four sublevels are:
· s (sharp)
· p (principle)
· d (diffuse)
· f (fine or fundamental)

The s (sharp) sublevel can hold 2 electrons.
The p (principle) sublevel can hold 6 electrons.
The d (diffuse) sublevel can hold 10 electrons.
The f (fine or fundamental) sublevel can hold 14 electrons.
