I'm thinking of a number. When you triple my number and subtract 8 you get 7. What is my number?

So here, just work backwards:

7+8=15
15/3=5

3a - 8 = 7
3a (-8 + 8) = (7+8)
3a = 15
(3a/3) = (15/3)
a = 5
