Monks and nuns helped to spread Byzantine influence by performing missionary duties. A missionary is a religious worker who travels to different areas (usually internationally) in order to spread their religious doctrine. The goal for missionaries is to convert individuals to their specific religion in order to gain more followers. This is exactly what the monks and nuns did to spread Byzantine influence.
